Frequently Asked Questions
At KPS, we know that undergoing cosmetic or reconstructive surgery is a significant life decision. We want that decision to be as informed as possible. That’s why we have created a list of 10 of the most frequently asked questions we have received from our patients.
What is the difference between cosmetic and reconstructive surgery?
Cosmetic surgery is performed to improve a patient’s appearance, confidence, and self-esteem. These procedures are usually not covered by insurance.
Reconstructive surgery is performed to correct areas on the body that have been damaged through a birth defect, trauma or illness. Reconstructive surgery is usually done to improve function. However, improved appearance may also result.
Insurance will often cover reconstructive surgery. However, coverage for specific procedures and levels of coverage may vary considerably.
What are the risks associated with surgery?
With any surgical procedure, risks are always a possibility. That is why, at KPS, we take every safety precaution possible before surgery begins. We also perform a thorough consultation with each patient to discuss their individual risks. When you schedule your consultation, Dr. Schoonover will go over your unique risks and the steps we will take to minimize them.
How do I know which size breast plant is right for me?
The choice between different size implants is a highly personal one. It will depend on some various factors including the reason for surgery.
Here are some questions to ask yourself:
- Do you feel your breasts are too large or too small? Are your breasts uneven?
- Have you recently gone through a significant weight loss?
- The answers to these questions will affect your decision on which size implant to use.
Dr. Schoonover will discuss these and all other factors that go into your treatment plan at your consultation.
What is the Difference between a Drainless Tummy Tuck and a Traditional Tummy Tuck?
A drainless tummy tuck varies from the traditional tummy tuck only at the end of the procedure. A conventional tummy tuck requires drainage tubes to remove excess fluids from the body. A drainless tummy tuck utilizes a revolutionary technique which renders these drain tubes unnecessary. This increases comfort for the patient and can often decrease bruising and scarring.
At Kansas Plastic Surgery, we offer both drainless and traditional tummy tucks.
Does a person’s voice change after a nose job?
Some patients may notice small changes in the voice, but this is not typical. That said, your voice does affect how you sound. People who use their voice for work, such as singers or voiceover artists, should share their concerns with Dr. Schoonover at their consultation.
How do I know if I am healthy enough for surgery?
During your pre-treatment appointments, Dr. Schoonover and his staff will perform a full physical and lab testing to ensure your health and safety during your treatment.
What can I do to minimize swelling and bruising after surgery?
With most surgeries, bruising and swelling can be helped with a cold or warm compress, pain medications, and certain ointments. It may also be a good idea to sleep in a reclined position for the first week after your surgery. Dr. Schoonover will discuss a specific recovery plan with you at your consultation.
How much will my procedure cost?
At Kansas Plastic Surgery, we believe in providing unique solutions for each of our patients. Because of that, the fees for procedures will vary. After you agree to a treatment plan, you will be provided with a detailed summary of the charges for your desired treatment.
When will I pay for my procedure?
Fees for Cosmetic procedures are expected to be paid in full 2 weeks before the scheduled procedure. Reconstructive services will be filed with the patient's insurance.
What insurance do you accept?
KPS accepts most major insurance. However, you should always check with your provider before making an appointment.
